Today’s #HCSHeroes spotlight is Nicole Spence, an exceptional education teacher at DuPont Elementary. Although she is new to the DuPont family, Ms. Spence is already making a significant difference for the students at her school.

“She fights for [our students] and works side-by-side with the general education classroom teachers to help support them,” said Molly Anderson, one of Ms. Spence’s colleagues. “She is a bright light in our school and always has a smile on her face. I am so thankful that I get to work with her this year and cannot wait to continue to see how big of an impact she truly will have on our school.”

Ms. Spence is responsible for the development and implementation of each child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). All of her students are in general education classrooms and she pulls them out to receive special education services that align with the goals outlined in their IEP.

“My favorite part of my job is working with general education teachers to help them accommodate special education students in their general education classroom,” said Ms. Spence. “Teaching special education is my dream job, and I am so proud of all my students and how much progress they have made during the pandemic.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially challenging for exceptional education teachers because of how difficult it is to meet the unique needs of their students in a virtual environment. Nonetheless, Ms. Spence has used it as an opportunity to reimagine her classroom.

“Teaching during COVID-19 has been difficult but I enjoy learning new ways to implement technology in the classroom,” said Ms. Spence. “My students work best with a consistent routine which is sometimes challenging to implement over online platforms such as Zoom. Over Zoom, my students enjoy scavenger hunts and any activity that involves movement.”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Ms. Spence on our team to support our students!
